Since 1997, the Zoological Society of Milwaukee’s (ZSM) Bonobo & Congo Biodiversity Initiative (BCBI) studies and protects the endangered bonobo and other flagship species of Salonga National Park to ensure their survival.
ZSM/ BCBI operates out of the Etate Research Station and ICCN Patrol Post located in the park’s Watsi Kengo Sector. The project’s holistic approach includes three central components: First, biomonitoring surveys and ecological research to assess bonobo and elephant populations, habitat, and poaching levels; Second, support for ICCN guards and strategic patrol posts, Etate and Lotulo and the Biondo Biondo sub-station, through training, technical, and material support for anti-poaching activities; and Third, community outreach programs like primary school support, adult literacy classes, guided park visits, and the market creation.
